MAPPING FLOODLINES

FUTURE BLUEPRINTS FOR RADICAL FLOOD RESILIENCE

ABOUT
THE PROJECT

“Mapping Floodlines” is an interactive art installation that tackles a pertinent issue in Norfolk, Virginia: flood resilience. Combining science, the arts, and the humanities to discuss climate and racial justice, viewers are invited to interact with a series of hand-drawn maps of Norfolk.

VOICES ON THE MAP

Flood resilience research often overlooks the voices of Black women and women of color. To amplify the voices of these historically underserved groups, oral interviews with local Black women and other women of color who have experienced the effects of flooding in Norfolk are paired with the project's visual data. Our aim is to emphasize the impact that this data and our human actions (and perhaps, inactions) in response have had or may have for the future of already marginalized people in the city. These interviews will be available to read online in October 2023.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

My name is Gabriela A. Igloria, and I am a senior at Old Dominion University. I was born and raised in Norfolk, Virginia and continue to make this city my home.

I created a preliminary version of this project for one of my classes during the Spring 2023 semester at ODU.

This summer, I have been given the opportunity to expand this project and my research on the ways that climate justice and racial justice overlap on a scholarship granted by the ODU Women's and Gender Studies Department. I am grateful to collaborate on and share this work with our larger community!
